Author Garret Keizer Is “Getting Schooled” Through Moments of Promise and Panic

Author Garret Keizer talks openly about the anxiety he felt before resuming his earlier career as a high school teacher in Vermont.  The temporary assignment lasted just one year, a period which forms the basis for Keizer’s book Getting Schooled: The Reeducation of an American Teacher.  Paul Larson’s in-depth interview with the author also examines the poetry he’s had published over the last forty-five years, collected in the book The World Pushes Back.

Enjoy this bonus clip of Keizer reading a poem about boarders near the border, that borders on the brutal.

Keizer delivered the “headlining reading” at the opening ceremonies of the Burlington Book Festival this year.

The festival features readings, workshops, film screenings, discussions, family activities and more.  Festival events last from Friday, September 26th until Sunday the 28th.
