Anxiety
by Simik Komaksiutiksak
A testimony to the process of healing through movement
Simik Komaksiutiksak’s directorial debut Anxiety is a breathtaking blend of artistic expression and profound storytelling that takes audiences on an emotional and sensory journey.
The play ran at Montreal’s MAI January 31st to February 1st and it proved to be more than just a performance:—it was a collage piece exploring the powerful exploration of inter generational trauma, the impact of colonialism, and the healing power of dance.
Komaksiutiksak, a Montreal-based Inuk artist known for their diverse work as a dancer, circus performer, model, and teacher, brings their unique voice to the stage, infusing the work with raw vulnerability and strength. Drawing on their rich cultural heritage, Komaksiutiksak’s choreography tells a story of struggle and resilience, while the mesmerizing dance sequences celebrate the possibilities of healing through movement.
“I’ve always done improv dancing,” they explain, “ever since I was a kid, ever since I can remember. It’s always been a good way for me to express my emotions when I didn’t have words to express them. If I was feeling sad, if I had a bully, I could just put on some music on at home and dance it out.”
What stands out in Anxiety is not only the depth of the themes explored, but also the inclusive nature of the production. With an audiodescription option for visually impaired and semi-vision-impaired spectators, as well as pre-show gatherings in ASL and LSQ on January 31st. The show thus ensured accessibility for a wide range of audiences. These thoughtful touches reflect Komaksiutiksak’s commitment to creating art that speaks to and connects with diverse communities.
The accompanying Mumiq Indigenous Artisans’ Market, opened at the MAI Gallery on January 31st and February 1st, adding an extra layer of cultural celebration, showcasing Indigenous craftsmanship and providing an opportunity for audiences to engage with the broader artistic landscape.
After its run in Montreal, Anxiety will continue its tour across Quebec, bringing its potent message to more communities at venues including Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Noranda, Culture Trois-Rivières, and Théâtre Gilles Vigneault.
Anxiety is not just a performance, it’s an invitation to witness the healing and transformative power of art.
