A Night of Electrifying Resilience: Joe Bocan’s Insoumise Ignites Montréal

Montréal audiences were treated to a dazzling and deeply uplifting performance tonight as Joe Bocan took to the stage at the 5e Salle at Place des Arts with her bold and theatrical show, Insoumise.

Curtain Call of Joe Bocan’s show: Insoumise

For those still feeling the sting of missing the cancelled Lady Gaga concert, Bocan delivered an experience that came strikingly close in energy and spectacle, proving that charisma, creativity, humor and star power transcend generations.

At 68, Bocan is a dynamic unstoppable performer. Wearing platform shoes she burst onto the stage with a frantic yet flawlessly orchestrated opening sequence, lights flickering on and off in rapid succession, setting a pulsating rhythm that carried through the evening.

The production was quite colorful, complete with more than ten costume changes, each marking a new emotional and visual chapter.

Insoumise was built on a modern and daring concept, a richly staged performance blending music, theatricality, and short monologues *( the latter which came in handy during a short, technical mishap). Throughout the show, Bocan embodied a range of characters, moving effortlessly between vulnerability, humor, and defiance. The singer drew on her past experiences as an actress to offer a deeply engaging show that felt as much like a piece of theatre as it did a concert.

She was accompanied on stage by a new generation of gifted multi instrumentalists, whose versatility and presence added depth and freshness to her show. One of the songs in the Insoumise repertoire was also composed by her son, Samuel ( present in the audience), which added a personal and contemporary touch to the show’s musical identity.

Louis-Julien Durso

Among the musicians, one artist in particular emerged as a standout, Louis Julien Durso. A finalist at the Festival de la chanson de Granby and a multidisciplinary talent, actor, singer, musician, and director, Durso captivated the audience when he was given the spotlight to perform one of his latest original pieces: Cinema L’amour.

His voice, both precise and powerful, carried a strong theatrical sensibility that revealed a vivid and imaginative artistic universe. Already known for collaborating closely with Bocan and opening for Daniel Lavoie, Durso is definitely a rising force in Québec’s cultural scene.

Insoumise was a celebration of artistic freedom, reinvention, and longevity. Bocan presented 9 new songs in both English and French, including a collaboration with Pierre Lapointe who composed the music for the song “Les désordres du cœur,”. She also revisited her previous repertoire while re-imagining it through a contemporary lens, marking over 40 years of career with fearless creativity.
