“The course of true love never did run smooth.”
— William Shakespeare

Inspired by the classic tragedy by William Shakespeare, the show flips the script on the centuries-old tale and imagines a completely new future for its heroine. Instead of heartbreak and tragedy, Juliet chooses independence, friendship and adventure by setting off for Paris with her closest companions to discover that life after Romeo may only the beginning of something great !

What truly sets & Juliet apart is its electrifying soundtrack, built from a glittering catalogue of global pop hits by legendary songwriter and producer Max Martin, whose work has shaped the sound of modern pop music. The story unfolds through instantly recognizable chart-toppers including Since U Been Gone, Roar, Baby One More Time, Larger Than Life, That’s The Way It Is and Can’t Stop the Feeling! : All songs that have defined generations and that now power a vibrant theatrical spectacle.

The musical features a witty book by Emmy Award-winning writer David West Read and is directed by Luke Sheppard, blending Shakespearean inspiration with contemporary humor and a modern feminist perspective.

Since its debut in 2019, the production has captivated audiences around the world with its playful storytelling, dazzling visuals and uplifting message of self-discovery.

For cast member Crystal Kellogg, who plays Anne, the show’s central theme of rewriting one’s story resonates deeply with modern audiences.

When asked ‘whether people today sometimes give up too quickly instead of rewriting their own stories,’ Kellogg offered a thoughtful perspective. “I think every person is on their own unique journey in this life and primarily are here to learn and grow,” she explains. “As long as we are experiencing life, we can choose how to do that individually regardless of whether others perceive that as giving up or not. There is always something to learn and that goes with every decision we make. I do believe in doing whatever makes you happy, and who am I to judge what that is to someone else?”

The show also challenges long-held ideas about romance. One of the biggest myths it explores is the concept of love at first sight. “Love at first sight is often a myth I think about and whether that is real or not,” Kellogg says. “What we discover in & Juliet is that true love is successful when it’s earned and respected versus given freely and haphazardly. My character Anne discovers throughout her journey what matters to her the most and what needs of hers are priority to make her marriage work. She discovers that her voice is indeed important to her feeling loved by her husband and ultimately what saves them.”

At its heart, however, the musical is not simply about romance: it is about self-discovery and self-love. According to Kellogg, the story makes it clear that loving oneself must come first. “This show is all about self-acceptance and second chances,” she says. “However, those second chances aren’t available until our characters accept themselves and are confident about their own self-worth. So ultimately the self-love comes first in order to appreciate and be available to the romantic love they deserve.

Running approximately two hours and forty minutes including an intermission and recommended for audiences aged eight and up, & Juliet offers an evening of laughter, empowerment and irresistible pop nostalgia.

With its vibrant energy and uplifting message, the Montreal opening night promises to be a celebration of music, theatre and the joy of rewriting your own ending.
