A Joyful Journey: Le Chanteur de Mexico by TLM

Théâtre Lyrique de la Montérégie’s recent production of Le Chanteur de Mexico was a delightful surprise: a heartfelt and thoroughly enjoyable operetta in French that got the audiences singing along to the catchy songs, inundating their senses with color and charm, as well as delivering an endearing sense of adventure.

While amateur in designation, this production was anything but lacking in passion or quality. In fact, it was a testament to what dedicated community artists can achieve when united by music and a love of storytelling.

From the quaint Basque countryside to the dazzling streets of Paris and the vibrant heart of Mexico, the story followed Vincent Etchebar, a young man whose rich voice first enchants his village and then captures the attention of an influential impresario. With his loyal friend Bilou by his side, Vincent embarks on a whirlwind journey that brings romance, humor, and unexpected twists.

The spirited flower-seller Cri-Cri added just the right dose of charm and mystery, bringing a dynamic spark to the unfolding plot.

The production was masterfully staged by TLM (Théâtre Lyrique de la Montérégie), a non-profit company known for nurturing young talent and offering a stage to emerging artists. Founded in 1997 by alumni of the Théâtre Lyrique de Boucherville, TLM provides aspiring performers, musicians, and technicians with a valuable springboard into the world of operetta and musical theatre.

After last year ‘s success production of Orpheus in the Underworld, this latest show was yet another testament to their mission, featuring a cast that mixes seasoned professionals, promising new voices, and a dedicated team of volunteers ( featured below).

The musicality of the production was strong, with vocals that soared and a live orchestra led by Artistic Director : Étienne Cousineau that, while modest in size, delivered with both warmth and energy.

The set design, costumes, and lighting all reflect careful thought and creativity, offering a visually satisfying complement to the buoyant score.

More than just a performance, Le Chanteur de Mexico was a fun and entertaining experience: playful, nostalgic, and bursting with joie de vivre. It’s a reminder of the beauty of live theatre and the power of community.
