Two life-long friends who are artists in Canada came up with an ambitious and creative way to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday this past year. Carol Loeb and Alison Grapes drove the Trans-Canada Highway cross-country for nearly 8 weeks, from coast-to-coast, roughly 7-thousand kilometers (4,800 miles) across Canada, stopping every 150 kilometers to paint a portrait of what they saw.
Their 100 paintings are on display this Canada Day holiday in Montreal.
The artists would choose different subjects at each stop. In Montreal, for example, Carol focused on one of the many construction barricades drivers have become accustomed to, while Alison painted the landscape looking toward the Eastern Townships.

Carol and Alison say along with their paintings, the memories from their journey from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia will last a lifetime.
The exhibition kicked off with a gala this week, and will be on exhibit at Gallery 203 located at 227 Notre Dame Ouest in Montreal through July 5th.
The artists also have a book with photos and the stories behind all their paintings.
