One of the nation’s oldest winter carnivals kicks off this weekend in Northern New York. Volunteers have been hard at work helping to put blocks of ice in place that make up the sprawling ice palace that has been the centerpiece of Saranac Lake’s winter carnival for more than a century. Altogether, about 40 volunteers are using the bitter cold to their advantage to get the palace constructed ahead of the carnival getting underway this weekend.
Last year, warm temperatures made it hard to construct the palace. But this year, it’s been a much different story. There has been plenty of ice. The palace will come to life on Saturday night, celebrating this year’s carnival theme, Music Legends, some of whom may actually be found within the palace’s icy walls. The winter carnival runs through next weekend.
