Universally Accessible Trail Opens
The Nature Conservancy has opened one of the longest hiking trails in the Adirondacks that is accessible not only to walkers, runners & bikers — but also wheelchairs.
The new trail is named in honor of Tim Barnett, the former director of the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy. The mile-and-a-half loop was built this summer on the Bouquet River Nature Preserve in Willsboro, New York. The trail and preserve run along the Bouquet River & 2 miles of Lake Champlain Shoreline. The crushed stone surface makes it easier for wheelchairs and people with limited mobility. The walks may also be therapeutic for residents of the near-by Champlain Valley Senior Center in Willsboro, including those with dementia.
