People Near Here | Tomb of the Unknowns

Last fall we followed along on a North Country Honor Flight with local veterans to visit the memorials in Washington, D.C. built in their honor. One of the stops on trip, and certainly one of the most moving, was the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. The memorial is among the most hallowed in America, and has come to represent many generations of Americans who have given their lives for our nation, and our freedom.

Did you know that the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery was not the first in America? The first was officially recognized by the United States Government decades before Arlington, and as our Derek Muirden tells us, it’s located in Plattsburgh, New York.

America’s First Tomb of The Unknowns is located in the Old Post Cemetery on New York State Route 9 just south of the traffic circle, in South Plattsburgh.
