Interview with Documentarians behind “Lake Effect”
A new documentary explores if there’s a link between clusters of ALS and bacteria found in some blue-green algae.
We talk with the filmmakers Jackie and Jim Heltz about the groundbreaking research being done by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the University of Vermont in communities on the shores of Lake Champlain and other waterways with abnormally high rates of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Their film called “Lake Effect” will air next Wednesday, September 12th at 8pm on Mountain Lake PBS.

I have been suffering from amyotrophic laterals sclerosis (ALS) disease for the last three years and had constant pain, especially in my knees.I was tripping and unable to get upstairs due to (ALS), My doctor put me on riluzole, letting me know there was no cure but the medication might provide me a few more months of delayed symptoms.The Rilutek (riluzole) did very little to help me. My first symptoms of ALS occurred in 2014, but was diagnosed in 2016.
