Train Disaster at Lac Megantic
Train Disaster: A grim search north of the border for victims killed in the massive explosion of a runaway freight train in the town of Lac-Megantic, Quebec. 20 bodies have been discovered so far, and police say 30 people still missing are presumed dead. The MMA freight train was hauling 73 cars full of crude oil when, according to the railroad, an engineer failed to set enough hand-brakes. The train started rolling in the middle of the night and was traveling at a high rate of speed by the time it reached downtown Lac-Megantic where it jumped the tracks and several cars exploded, sending what witnesses describe as “a river of fire” through several blocks of the downtown incinerating as many as 30 buildings and as many as 50 people.
