Adirondack Land Swap: Proposition 5 on the November ballot would allow NYCO minerals to expand its wollastonite mine in Lewis to the edge of the state forest preserve. In exchange for the 200 acres, the company is offering to swap 1,500 acres of land that would provide new access to the Jay Mountain wilderness. NYCO says the land swap will give the company a new supply of wollastonite, about one-million tons, that will keep its current workforce of about 100 employees on the job for about another decade. But critics are urging voters statewide to say no. Adirondack Wild and Protect the Adirondacks believe the land should remain protected as “forever wild” and not be traded for use by a private company.
