SPECIAL PUBLIC FORUM ADDRESSING THE HEROIN EPIDEMIC IN THE NORTH COUNTRY

The Forum Hosted by Mountain Lake PBS Invites Experts and the Public Together to Examine Community Response

Plattsburgh, NY –6/12/14 – Mountain Lake PBS will host a special public forum addressing the growing heroin crisis in the North Country at their studio on June 24 at 6 PM. The forum will be recorded and broadcast on Friday, June 27 at 8 PM.

Law enforcement and health care workers say heroin addiction and overdoses are growing at an alarming rate in the North Country.  State lawmakers are responding by introducing bills that toughen penalties for dealers, provide better treatment and rehab for addicts, and equip first responders and caretakers with overdose-reversal drugs.

This hour-long special edition of Mountain Lake Journal will report on how widespread the epidemic has become in the North Country over the last two years. A panel of experts will discuss the impact on communities, and efforts to combat the crisis, taking questions from the moderator, and from the live studio audience.

“We are alarmed by this trend, and as a public media station, we have the opportunity to bring this discussion to the public,” said Alice Recore, President and CEO. “This is an issue that impacts everyone in our community, and this forum will help bring this discussion out into the open.”

Associated Press, Edward R. Murrow award winner, and Emmy-nominated Host Thom Hallock will moderate the discussion, bringing over 25 years of journalism excellence and in-depth knowledge of the North Country region to the discussion.

Contributing journalist Tomeka Weatherspoon will have an exclusive one-on-one interview with a recovering addict who has struggled for several years with heroin and prescription painkiller addiction.  He has been clean for about a year since the death of his girlfriend, who was also an addict. Since then, he returned to college at Plattsburgh State University, and graduated in May 2014.

The forum will be broadcast on Mountain Lake PBS on Friday, June 27 at 8 PM, with repeat airings on Saturday, June 28 at 7 PM and Sunday June 29 at 10 AM.

Support for this forum is provided by the Grant and Sally Webb Endowment Fund through the Plattsburgh College Foundation.
