Located snugly in the heart of Plateau Mont Royal, restaurant Jano offers nothing but the best Portuguese cuisine. Fresh off the grill and into your plate, guests are invited to discover the classics of a delicious culinary tradition which are guaranteed to tickle your taste buds at every bite!
The restaurant has been a family run business that currently spans 3 generations. The owner, Carlos Casteneira and his children run a great restaurant that is well grounded in tradition. When asked what his motto and secret to success is, he answered: “I offer good fresh food at decent prices ... Just keep it simple and do it well!”. The restaurant certainly lives up to this statement as the latest addition to the menu has been sweet and juicy calamari and that was 28 years ago!
Jano’s restaurant doesn't pretend to be anything else but a great place for savory grilled meat and seafood. As Carlos explains, the secret to tasty grilled food is all in the way you handle the meat; Control the intensity of the fire and don’t overturn the meat too often !
Recently, my family enjoyed a full 3 course menu of Portuguese specialties for three people. As a starter, we received a mixed salad with their vinaigrette house dressing which was tasty without being too overwhelming as well as a generous platter of their home cut French fries.
Before the pièce de resistance, we enjoyed the freshness of a Flor de Crasto Duoro red Portuguese wine, a savory good acidity wine with aromas of wild berries and vanilla that would nicely complement the meat.
For our main dish we were recommended to share an extra large BBQ platter. The platter is usually meant for 2 but we asked them to specially adapt it for the three of us. The grilled, mixed combo platter generally allows guests to choose a combo of four different dishes from a range of different meats and seafood (chicken, beef, lamb chops, octopus, sausage, rabbit and quail) to name a few choices. We had a choice of 5 different kinds of grill meats & seafood. As my mother is a spice fan, for dipping, they brought out a semi-sweet spicy sauce than enhanced the already splashed peri peri covered meat well. Overall, the calamari and lamb were my favorite but all five selections were tender, juicy and overall amazing. The restaurant also offers fish lovers the catch of the day. That night, Porgy fish was on the menu and according to the gentleman seated at the next table, it was cooked to perfection.
Last but not least, the gourmet in me somehow found room to savor their scrumptious dessert; a mini caramelized tart that was not too sweet but very flavorful!
My parents and I decided to go to Jano's because my friends raved about it. Needless to say they were 100% right on the choice. Service was friendly and fast, the BBQ was amazing and overall the menu was reasonably priced and totally worth the convivial atmosphere and dining experience!
Janos restaurant is the ideal destination regardless of the occasion. It is an excellent choice for your private parties and special events. Upon reservations, their team will take great pleasure to be your host for a memorable evening. I would generally recommend the place to any BBQ or meat lover. The restaurant is situated right on Saint- Laurent so it is a convenient stone throw away from several points of attractions and clubs where you can finish your night off with a cocktail or a night out clubbing!
