Willows are life force incarnate, profuse and blooming joyously, whether we pay attention to them or not. Thanks for the reminder to stop and admire them!

In the Sally Garden

I learned from my mandolin teacher that "Sally" in the oldtime tune "Sally in the Garden" was, actually, my oldtime childhood friend, the willow tree, salix, prized for the analgesic qualities of its bark. Ed's characterisitically evocative and informative piece, had me boyishly wandering the banks of my dad's pasture in Brown County, SD, on the banks of the James, where willow branches trailed in lazy, newly-thawed water wandering its way from our farm to New Orleans.
