Mountain Lake PBS’s newest documentary, ON HOME GROUND, takes an intimate look into the lives of three veterans who returned home to the Adirondacks after deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and asks the question, after all the sacrifice, when does home finally feel like home again?
Mountain Lake PBS is seeking support to cover the costs of post-production and distribution. Funds are being raised on Kickstarter.com, a site where individuals are given the opportunity to invest in projects that match their interests. ON HOME GROUND, has a fundraising window that ends on October 25, and if the $10,000 budget is not raised, all the pledges will be cancelled.
The project was filmed primarily in the summer of 2014 and is scheduled for broadcast on Mountain Lake PBS on November 11, 2014. The funds raised on Kickstarter will help Mountain Lake PBS ensure that this film is distributed throughout the PBS system, and seen by as many people as possible.
ON HOME GROUND takes us on a journey of re-assimilation into civilian life with veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars living along the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. Their small hometowns are scenic and peaceful, but also remote and isolating. The physical distance means limited access to essentials like healthcare, and a struggling local economy contributes to the widespread unemployment for veterans.
Years after coming back, each vet reflects on their homecoming, rebuilding relationships, grappling with physical and mental changes, and finding a unique, grounding camaraderie among fellow veterans.
"Making this documentary has been quite the experience, but there's still much to do," says director and producer Tomeka Weatherspoon. "We're definitely looking forward to showcasing this local film to area residents, but we are also hoping to extend our reach to viewers outside our region. So, we've got our fingers crossed that the crowdfunding campaign works."
“Our aim is to increase awareness and engagement around this very important issue. This region has a rich military history, and as the region’s storyteller, we hope to spark conversations and give the public an opportunity to share their story of service.” said Alice Recore, President & CEO of Mountain Lake PBS.
