NCCCA Announces Performance of The Belle of Amherst by William Luce
Kathleen Recchia to play Emily Dickenson
The North Country Cultural Center for the Arts (NCCCA Arts Center) is pleased to announce the upcoming performance of The Belle of Amherst by William Luce, which will serve to highlight theatre arts as the third performance in the NCCCA’s 2013 Spring Performance Series. It will also serve as a fundraiser for the Arts Center. Local actress, Kathleen Recchia, will act as Emily Dickenson in the play, which juxtaposes Dickenson’s poems as they correlate with the telling of her life.
“We’re excited to incorporate both theatre and music into this Spring’s Performance Series,” says Janine Scherline, Executive Director of the NCCCA. “As we have seen so far in the Series, the Main Gallery provides the perfect setting for intimate performances.”
Scherline adds, “In addition, the Main Gallery will be filled with an exhibition of Art Quilts made by regional artists in May. The gallery’s natural atmosphere combined with the quilts will surely captivate audiences and capture the play’s essence.”
“It’s a really beautiful script,” says Recchia, “The way the playwright integrates her poetry into her life is amazing. I get something different out of the poems every time I perform the piece, and I think the audience will too.”
“This play is a wonderful resource for educators and students studying poetry and American Literature,” says Emily Owens, NCCCA Education Coordinator. “We look forward to exploring opportunities to bring theatre and literary arts to area schools.”
Kathleen Recchia has performed The Belle of Amherst throughout the area, including at SUNY Plattsburgh and The Old Mill Art Studio. She has worked with many theatre companies, such as CTP and Essex Theatre Co., and is also a director of youth theatre.
The Belle of Amherst will be performed in the Arts Center’s main gallery on Saturday, May 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be $15 for adults, $10 for students/seniors and free for children ages 12 and under.
The Arts Center is open to visitors Tuesday through Friday, 10am - 5pm and Saturdays, 10am - 4pm. For a complete listing of all events and exhibitions, please visit the Arts Center’s website at: www.plattsburgharts.org
