BUDGET PLAN: Governor Andrew Cuomo outlines his 142-billion dollar budget proposal that holds spending at 2%, fills a projected 1.35 billion dollar deficit, without a broad tax increase. His plan includes flat spending for state agencies and municipalities, 1,400 state layoffs, closes 2 downstate prisons, and raises fees on drivers caught texting or talking on their cell phones. The budget includes a 4% increase in school aid, and several million dollars to market upstate products and promote upstate tourism. Cuomo also called for the Legislature to approve the opening of as many as 7 casinos in Upstate New York.
GUN LAWS CHALLENGED: Gun owners threaten to boycott a new state registry that is part of New York’s tough new gun law.
POLICE SHOOTING: The parents of a former marine shot and killed during an armed standoff with a Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and struggled with mental illness, according to Dusty Clark’s parents, who talked with WCAX-TV. The Clinton County District Attorney will decide in the coming weeks if the use of deadly force was justified.
VILLAGE VOTE: The small village of Keeseville, New York votes to dissolve.
COCK-A-DOODLE-SHOE RACE: A mid-winter snowshoe race highlights a little known gem in the Adirondacks, The New Land Trust, which oversees a network of more than 200 miles of trails open to the public to use for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. To Learn More: www.newlandtrust.org
