The Sembrich, located at 4800 Lakeshore Drive in Bolton Landing, presents “An Evening of Tango,” featuring Latin Grammy Award winning bandoneon player Raul Jaurena, on Wednesday, July 17, at 7:30 p.m. Admission: $25.
Raul Jaurena is among today's most prominent performers of the bandoneon, a button accordion essential to any tango ensemble. He is joined by internationally acclaimed Venezuelan singer Marga Mitchell; violinist Daniel Szasz, concertmaster of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta; and pianist Alina Voicu.
“For this program we will feature some well known tangos, as well as some lesser known works,” says Mr. Szasz. “It will be a mixture of pieces, from Piazzolla standards to Raul's own compositions.”
Mr. Jaurena's music pays a very personal tribute to his native South America and to his adopted hometown of New York, combining the traditional roots of the tango and the style of the “Tango Nuevo” influenced by Astor Piazzolla.
“I always enjoy playing tangos,” Mr. Szasz adds, “especially with somebody like Raul, who can inspire you so much!”
