BAKERSFIELD, VERMONT – Year two of a scholarship fundraiser in memory of a northern Vermont teen is aiming to build on the turnout from last year.
The Dawson Perley Memorial Car Show will be held on Saturday, September 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westcom’s Snack Bar, 1685 Main St. North (Route 108), in Bakersfield. Registration for participating vehicles is $15 at the door, and is open to all cars, trucks, motorcycles. Proceeds from car show registration will benefit the Dawson Perley Athletic Scholarship Fund. Admission for the general public is free.
Dawson Perley, a student at Enosburg Falls High School, died on June 28, 2015 as a result of injuries he sustained in an ATV rollover. He excelled in athletics, especially soccer and basketball, but beyond his love of sports, the 15 year-old is remembered for being a loyal and caring friend to many, sticking up for people when they needed it the most. The scholarship in Dawson’s memory will benefit high school graduates who hold the values Dawson represented.
Judges will award trophies for the top ten cars, and for the best vehicle restoration (before and after photos required). Spectators will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite, and Dawson’s family will also select a car to receive the Dawson Perley Memorial Award. Additionally, an award will be given in memory of Samuel Gates, and there will be a separate award for the motorcycle category.
Throughout the day a cornhole tournament, 50/50 raffle, and silent auction will be held, with the proceeds also benefiting the scholarship fund. The silent auction features items from local business, pieces from Vermont artists and craftsmen, baked goods, donations from auto parts stores, hardware, and many other selections.
The silent auction has started on Facebook, with bids being accepted on the Dawson Perley Memorial Car Show Silent Auction group page through September 2. Bidding will re-open at the car show on September 3, with the highest bidder being awarded the items at the close of the day.
The Dawson Perley Athletic Scholarship Fund awarded two $500 awards in June to students at the Enosburg Falls Junior and Senior High School, and organizers hope to help more dedicated students in the coming years.
