This Christmas, the Grands Ballets Canadiens once again presents the magical family Christmas ballet: The Nutcracker! From the 12th to the 30th of December, come with your family to experience the magic of this classic tale, performed wonderfully by les Grands Ballets Canadiens at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier of La Place des Arts.
A production like no other, this adaptation of the original Hoffmann tale was created in 1964 for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal by Quebec dancer and choreographer Fernand Nault (1920-2006). This year marks the 50th anniversary of Nault’s cheerful adaptation and Les Grands Ballets wishes to pay a special tribute to this great choreographer who left a positive mark within the company and beyond...
The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet choreographed masterfully by the late Fernand Nault, based on the work of Maurice Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The memorable score is penned by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. This year’s performance notably boasts much Christmas cheer, a set of colorful new costumes for the dancers, a wonderful pas de deux and of course a handsome prince!
One hour before each performance, actor Jacques Piperni will give a reading of Hoffmann's classic children's tale and a young member of the audience will be randomly selected as the “Mouse of the Day” The lucky winner will then dress up as a mouse and appear on stage with the rest of the company – always a crowd favorite !
"Family and friends have gathered in the parlor to decorate the beautiful Christmas tree in preparation for the night's festivities. As the children receive their gifts, Clara’s godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, gives her a beautiful, wooden nutcracker, which her naughty brother Fritz breaks in a fit of jealousy... Fortunately, her godfather, who is a little bit of a magician, fixes it and everyone retreats for the evening. During the night, Clara returns to the parlor to be with her nutcracker. Suddenly, mice and rats invade the room and begin an epic battle with tin soldiers. The nutcracker comes to life and with Clara’s help, defeats the rat prince. Transformed into prince charming, he brings her to the Land of Snow and then to the Kingdom of Sweets, where she experiences a magical evening with the Sugar Plum Fairy and her entourage..."
With spectacular decors, over 300 cheerful costumes and fantastic dancers, let the spectacular magic of the Nutcracker open up a whole new world of fantasy and make you return to the wonderful world of childhood dreams this holiday season!
The Nutcracker will be performed from Thursday Dec 12th to the 30th in Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier of la Place des Arts.
