Le pain et le vin "Bread and Wine"
In order to imagine the future, it is important to study the past.
After revisiting four centuries of history in order to highlight our relationship with our environment and waterways, Nouveau Theatre Experimental invites theater goers to rediscover Canadian heritage and turn the contents of our stomach into a political issue!
"Bread and Wine" is the third and final chapter of an ambitious, historical theatrical saga (Revelations of the History of French Canada, 1608-1998), produced by NTE that draws inspiration from various periodic events in the lives of the peoples of North America, since the founding of Quebec City up until the recent ice storm.
Currently running from the 23rd of Septembre to the 11th of October 2014 at Espace Libre, the play combines excessive theatrical musical & dance numbers intertwined with sociopolitical issues to trace the evolution of our eating habits. All the action takes place on a large, rectangular garden - like shaped stage with a hidden staircase from which the artists can emerge from scene to scene. With this final chapter, the audience are treated to a feast for all their senses as even their seats are lined with fake grass that only heightens the theatrical experience.
You don’t need to have seen the previous two chapters of the trilogy in order to plunge into the intrigues and twists of the final piece. The eight dynamic and versatile cast members, through the use of various historical costumes and innovative props, make us relive the initial ethnic intermingling, prominent fear of scarcity and management of abundance that was prevalent in both the rustic camps of the First Nations tribes (willing and ready to provided ample feasts for their dead), to the modern day nutrition gurus we see on television regularly.
Le Pain et le Vin is an interesting peek into French Canadian history, but also an examination of our past and current food culture. We can’t help but wonder which character traits of our ancestors remain in our current DNA? Where is the future of the food industry headed and just what exactly does a French Canadian eat during winter time?
Play in French currently running from the 23rd of Septembre to the 11th of October 2014 nightly Tuesday to Saturday 8 pm except for Oct 2nd 7 pm and Saturday 11 of Oct at 4 pm.
