Le Balcon - Cabaret and DinnerWelcome to Le Balcon. Every week this cabaret invites guests to enjoy a wide variety of musical acts, themed nights and dancing evenings.
With its dual English and Francophone culture, gorgeous architecture, historical port and a myriad of other unique venues and cafes, Montreal is a city that embraces a touch of European culture. Nestled comfortably in the Old Montreal, lies a hidden gem that offers tourists a unique venue to experience an atmosphere between Parisian dinner theater and New York cabaret.
Welcome to Le Balcon. Every week this cabaret invites guests to enjoy a wide variety of musical acts, themed nights and dancing evenings. Seating around 80 in the dining room, visitors have the possibility to enjoy a dinner-show formula of the highest caliber in a very lush and intimate setting.
This year, Le Balcon has partnered up with the Festival Montréal en Lumière to offer an even more diverse program to its regular monthly schedule. I had the pleasure of attending three of their very unique shows and also to savor their distinct fusion cuisine inspired by the flavors of the world.
My first impression was that the staff at Le Balcon was all very welcoming, knowledgeable about the night’s program and friendly. Our waiter, Mrs. Chantal Litalien, led us to a round table and served us mineral water from a clear glass bottle that featured custom design label poetry and famous sayings. The owner of the cabaret, Julien, is passionate about bringing quality acts to the stage and is always willing to hear customer suggestions.
I was impressed by the quality of the dinner menu. The restaurant has a fixed list of different platters to choose from that varies from one performance to the next. During our first show, our waitress suggested that we try a Quebec, Crackling Cider (Rose) produced by Luk E Luk which I found to be most refreshing.
As entrees, we were offered a tasty homemade carrot potage that had a smooth and creamy texture. I also chose to savor the flavorful sautéed escargots, accompanied by a crisp pastry puff and purple lettuce. With the addition of piping hot fresh bread, it set the bar high for the rest of the evening meal.
For our main dish, I selected the pasta of the day – Duck confit. I was extremely pleased with this selection as the meat was tender and the pasta was served in a tasty cream of Parmesan and truffle oil demi-glace sauce, which gave off a fragrant odor that stimulated the senses. My guest ordered an equally tasty grilled salmon with orange sauce and mixed vegetables. The flesh of the fish was pink and well cooked in a delicious blend of honey and thyme sauce.
For dessert, I loved the generous portion of mango sorbet served onto fruit puree that was quite refreshing. I also tried their hazelnut and chocolate crisp cake with strawberry and chocolate sauce, a real treat!
In my opinion, a perfect evening in good company can only be highlighted with the addition of an enjoyable show. Here below is a brief overview of some of the shows on offer at Le Balcon:
Viva Mexico, land of cultural spirit and fiery passions. According to the World tourism organization, around 21.5 million international tourists visit the country annually. Typically, a traveler will have a pretty smooth trip and will come back with amazing tales of beautiful temples, exotic and rich foods, sensual dancing and gorgeous beaches. However, travelers sometime come back with horror stories about drug cartels, kidnappings, homophobia and sex crimes. Anyway you look at it; Mexico is a city of paradoxes.
To fully immerse yourself and get to the core of a culture, you have to get ready to expose yourself to the raw voice of its people. Cabaret Mexicano is a whimsical musical and dance journey that permits us outsiders to catch a glimpse of the reality that challenges and parodies social norms and identities. By presenting a series of dance numbers that deal with themes such as lost love, lust, addiction, homosexuality and crime, the viewer gets an intimate perspective of daily life as seen through the eyes of local urban culture. Mexican- born choreographer, Edgar Zendejas has created a lucid universe in which young bodies collide and express passions and pain through unique ballet jazz moves. Amid a sea of chaos, everyone and everything is fair game…
In Life is a Cabaret, Steve Hanley and Emilie Josset, accompanied by pianist John Gilbert, makes you re-live some of the best classical musicals of Broadway as well as re-discover some of the most beautiful songs of the French repertoire. Throughout the night, the pair of singers change costumes, makeup and perform light choreography to serenade their audience with classics such as Stardust, Recipe for Love, Formidable and La Boheme. Emilie makes full use of her past experience playing in the musical Chicago to perform “Roxie”. To fully appreciate the musical content of this performance, this show is best enjoyed along with the dinner - show option.
As if coming directly from the land of roaming gypsies, The Tradición Flamenca troup, comprised of expressive singer El Chele, skilled guitarist Michel Beauchamps and fiery dancers Genevieve Mondoux and Marie Andree Cloutier, presents “Paséando por Andalucia” which can be literally translated as “a walk in Andalucia”. This dynamic quartet performed a variety of pieces from traditional flamenco repertoire including fandangos, siguiriyas and allegrias. Singer Chele even presented a long and soulful Saeta: a traditional religious chant usually performed from atop a balcony. In the same tradition as in Seville or Madrid, the audience is transported to a place where sensuality, spirit and fiery passion ooze from both the beautiful dancers in colorful costumes and talented musicians.
Whether it is for a romantic evening, to enjoy a quality performance or to enjoy a market menu with international accents, Le Balcon is a wonderful place to experience an intimate cabaret environment.
