The GRAND BURLESQUE show recently took place at Club Soda from the 21 to the 23 of mars and was met with resounding acclamation from fans of this genre art form who reveled in the glittery world of sensuality, fishnet stockings, and somewhat lascivious dances.
The art of burlesque has known several shifts in forms and variations throughout the ages. To those new to the scene, burlesque refers to performances done in a variety show format. This form of entertainment was extremely popular from the 1860s to the 1940s, taking place in clubs or cabarets as well as theatres, and often featured bawdy comedy and female striptease. Since the 1990’s there has been a resurgence of interest in this form of adult entertainment. Scandalous to some, titillating to others, the art form has been the subject of many controversies, but continues to thrive in the heart of Montreal.
Since 2009, the enchanting Scarlett James has welcomed the best of the best acts in Burlesque for Montreal’s viewing pleasure. Along with several other quality performers, she brings the audience to a world of dreams and wonders by astonishing them with a variety of costumed, circus, musical and burlesque acts.
At the Grand Burlesque Show, VIP guests were greeted at the door by smiling, glittery, costumed cancan girls decked in full, plumage galore, who led guests to their front row seats where champagne atop red velvet tablecloths were waiting.
The hosts of the evening: the lovely Christelle & charismatic Benjamin Marquis, excelled at making all attendees feel welcome and introduced each act with much heart and enthusiasm.
The quality of the acts that were presented was very satisfying. Each act paid tribute to some of the big names and legends of burlesque and variety shows such as Fred Astaire and Josephine Baker.
Below are some of the acts that really stood out for me :
Plummeria - A quartet of very energetic ladies wowed the audience with their four dance numbers and acrobatic finale version of French Cancan
Lavender May - This angel faced rising star of the burlesque world performed a film noir, gangster – kidnapping skit in very sexy lace.
LouLou Duchess De Riere - She paid a dynamic homage to the musical “bronze Venus”, Josephine Baker, her colorful act left many going bananas over her skillful and rhythmic dancing.
M ( Emily Gair ) - The stunning miss M, an ex-cancer survivor – showed great confidence and strength of character in her revealing strip act.
The Lady Josephine: This not being the first time I had the pleasure of seeing her perform, I continue to be amazed by the quality of her acting skills and her ability to make the audience beg for more.
BonBon Bombay: She literally set the stage on fire by performing a fiery tribute to one of burlesque veteran legends: Satan's Angel: the Queen of The Fire Tassels. The entire audience could definitely feel the heat!
Gabriel Langelier & Chantale Nurse : This elegant duo gave a quality operatic performance of Libiamo ne' lieti calici, the famous duet from Verdi's La Traviata surrounded by glittery girls with feathers and sequins.
Klaxson: In burlesque it is not unfamiliar to have a tap dancing number midway in the show. Pierre Hudson did so brilliantly by paying homage to tap dancing legend Fred Astaire.
Scarlett James: The queen of the evening stunned everyone with two original skits set to the tune of the Pink Panther and was “OH so sparkling!” with a diamond theme! Her other seductive number in a foam filled bathtub definitely was the crowning highlight of the show.
