Are you eager to get mentally, physically and spiritually fit? Curious about the art of Yoga?
With the current hectic lifestyle that young professionals and adults often lead, finding time to step back and focus on overall health is becoming more and more desirable. With the opening of several yoga studios all over Montreal that offer a wide diversity of styles and subscriptions, it is not surprising that this thousand year old health practice is making a strong comeback .
Hatha (physical force) Yoga practices emerged around the 11th century in India. Gurus then introduced the art to Westerners in the late 19th and early 20th century. In current times, several branches have emerged including Ashtanga, Tantra and Moksha ( hot room) yoga.
For even the most skeptical of beginners, some of the most obvious, immediate benefits include:
- Improved flexibility and better posture
- Muscular strength
- Stress reduction
For long term practitioners, you've probably noticed that your sleep quality has improved or that you are less prone to catching a cold and overall you are feeling more relaxed.
Long term benefits can include:
- Preventing cartilage and joint breakdown, protecting your spine and improving your overall bone health.
- Promoting a healthy lifestyle
- Lowering your blood sugar and heart pressure
- Helping you to focus and concentrate on tasks.
As with any sport, it is important to respect your body’s limits and also to regularly drink water to keep yourself hydrated!
Montreal is a haven for those who are regular yoga practitioners, casual enjoyers and curious beginners. For those who want to try yoga in a more relaxed and fun setting, there are numerous group activities and social events that will appeal to the masses.
Here are two interesting events that are happening this week in Montreal that are not only yoga focused, but also engaged in important social causes :
