Fantasia Film Festival, Montreal Rocks the genre film culture
Fantasia Film Festival; North America's largest genre film festival that showcases hundreds of Action, Horror, Sci-fi, Asian and Animated films over three weeks in July and August.
It is with much love and admiration that I write about Fantasia Film Festival: Montreal's largest genre film festival in North America, which has quickly become one of the prominent annual highlights of my summer.
From day one, Fantasia film Festival started with a bang with a cast of impressive volunteers, programmers and lines of loyal fans! Annually showcasing hundreds of Action, Horror, Sci-fi, Asian and Animated films over three weeks in July and August, the festival warmly welcomes film lovers stars and public alike while giving genre cinema a place of choice in the beautiful city of Montreal!
I have been attending this unique festival almost since its inaugural year in 1996. How can I easily resume in one text, 18 years of passion, sharing strong emotions and vivid imagination with other film revelers, receiving copious hospitality from the friendly staff, indefatigable late-night parties and overall a wonderful venue for networking for anyone in the arts / cinema / media field?
One of the things that I absolutely love about the festival is the general openness and convivial atmosphere from all its participants. During screenings, it isn’t unusual to hear cheers or loud applause when an actor accomplishes a feat of glory or is just enjoying a moment to shine.
Guests and directors are equally willing and encouraged to mingle with attendees before and after screenings and it’s not unusual for parties to continue until the wee hours of the morning at various local pubs.
For its 2014 edition running ( July 17th to August 5th ) the Fantasia Film Festival launched the first official day of screenings with Riad Sattouf’s hilarious action parody Jacky au Royaume des Filles followed by Mamoru Oshii well loved animated classic GHOST IN THE SHELL. The second film, restored beautifully in HD master, was preceded by the presentation of a Fantasia Lifetime Achievement Award to Director Mamoru Oshii!
Among the many North American special premieres that the Festival have helped launch include Ringu, Inglourious Basterds, Thirst, We Are What We Are, Visitor Q and Night Watch. For 2014, Fantasia held a special screening of Guardians of the Galaxy sponsored by Ubisoft that delivered out - of - this - world entertainment much to the delight of the films numerous fans.
As the closing film of the festival, on August 5th 9:45 PM at Concordia Hall Theater, Director Abel Ferrara will introduce his action drama: Welcome to New York, starring legendary French actor Gerard Depardieu. Not to be missed!
As I leave this year's yet again action filled edition I want to extend a warm congratulations to all the programmers, volunteers and everyone else working collaboratively to make Fantasia a memorable festival with warm hospitality and offering year after year a strong line-up of life impacting films.
