Christmas Tales OSM, Kent Nagano
An evening filled with music and an exciting Christmas Tale / Adventure at the new Maison Symphonique de Montreal .
What a wonderful way to enjoy a traditional Quebec holiday evening !
With joyful enthusiasm and light humor, he took the entire audience on a journey to the past as he plunged us all into the world of two rival villages from an area surrounding the Saint-Maurice River, caught in the middle of an epic battle of intense rivalry.
Between moments of pure storytelling delight, we got the chance to listen to some holiday classics performed with gusto by l'OSM, including the grand Christmas Night overture by Rimski - Korsakov, excerpts from the magical Nutcracker Suite by Piotr Ilitch Tchaikovski, the enchanting Toy Symphony attributed to Leopold Mozart as well as many other excerpts...
Bryan Perro asked us to listen as he recounted the tale of two mysterious children, one from each rival village, as they sow turmoil by the power of their strange abilities; namely their unique capacity of spitting out precious gold and silver. As though under the ice of a great river with its dark and deep waters... The devil waits patiently as he joyfully observes his seeds of hatred flourish and grow ...
Meanwhile, podorhythmists ( foot tappers Alain Lamontagne, doubling on harmonica and Michel Bordeleau, doubling on fiddle), skillfully represented the rival lumberjacks and rafts-men from the snow covered villages by tapping out a storm !
The evening was complete when children and young dancers spreading the joy around by joining in the tapping of the Reel de Pointe - au - Pic accompanied by musical sawist Simon Gauthier.
One can quote Bryan Perro's story, which take on a new meaning when he says : "We give and we receive presents at Christmas. That's how it is...it's a part of our tradition. Of course, some presents are more special than others," as we were all able to see during this concert.
A bountiful harvest is expected…at Christmas time!
