This January, the curtains of the Centaur Theater will rise to unleash Johnny Legdick and the Freaks!
Created by The JEM & Playwright Hero and shrewdly written by Jonah Carson, Jimmy Karamanis, Elijah Fisch, Macleod Alan Truesdale and Tyler Miller, the plot of this satirical Rock - opera is surprisingly quite simple:
Cursed with a third leg, Johnny Legdick is hastily sold at a young age to the Suckadecocka circus by his parents and forced to live a life of drudgery and misery. However, fate has other plans for this young man. With the help of a pantless half-horseman, bananas! and upon finding his one true love (who is similarly disfigured in a handy way), he decides to do what no freak has tried before at Suckadecocka circus... ESCAPE!
Last summer (2014), the young theater company rocked the St-Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival with a remount of Johnny Legdick, which was honoured by being invited to play this winter at the Centaur Theatre as part of the currently running Wildside Festival.
For the past 18 years, the festival has been delivering quality productions that delve devilishly into the adult world while keeping the audience gleefully rooted in childhood.
I had the pleasure of seeing this play at the Fringe and I am glad to say that this current production is the ultimate Johnny Legdick performance: The play is held in the gorgeous 240 seat Centaur Theatre Company studio space, The cast is young and dynamic and the dialogue is witty and rhythmic. The team has added a keyboardist and violinist to their already eclectic band as well as introducing two new, original songs.
After an oversold run last February and an award winning Fringe remount, an evening with the cast of Johnny Legdick will ensure general hilarity and good rock verses as the freaks will certainly once again RISE.
