Marin Luther King Day is recognized as a National Day of Service for all AmeriCorps Programs. In following the mission of AmeriCorps for the Adirondacks, to be an essential community partner in providing effective literacy services, AmeriCorps Members and Volunteers of Franklin, Clinton, and Essex Counties are taking action to promote both literacy and personal health. An AmeriCorps volunteer, Hannah Barber, will be visiting a variety of local day cares, including Giggles and Wiggles at 10:30am and Happy Feet at 2:30pm, promoting literacy through a fun, interactive presentation.
Children will then be able to demonstrate their reading and writing abilities as they write a small message on a transportable AmeriCorps Mural. Gift bags full of reading accessories and health pamphlets will engage children and families while introducing healthy habits to begin now and carry into adulthood.
Other local AmeriCorps projects include a book give away at Champlain Centre in Plattsburgh New York, Literacy and Tolerance Mural at SUNY TBI Center, and literacy and health advocacy at NCCC in Saranac Lake New York. As always, community support is encouraged. If interested in becoming active as an AmeriCorps Volunteer visit http://www.americorps.gov/.
