Plattsburgh, NY – 09/24/14 – Mountain Lake PBS’s newest documentary, ON HOME GROUND, takes an intimate look into the lives of three veterans returning home to the Adirondacks from Iraq and Afghanistan, and asks the question, after all the sacrifice, when does home finally feel like home again? Now they’re turning to you, and the internet, to help fund the project on Kickstarter.com.
Following a slow military withdrawal, American troops are returning home to face of a different set of conflicts. ON HOME GROUND takes us on a journey of re-assimilation into civilian life with veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars living along the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York. Their small hometowns are scenic and peaceful, but also remote and isolating. The physical distance means limited access to essentials like healthcare, and a struggling local economy contributes to the widespread unemployment for veterans.
Years after coming back, each vet reflects on their homecoming, rebuilding relationships, grappling with physical and mental changes, and finding a unique, grounding camaraderie among fellow veterans.
The project was filmed primarily in the summer of 2014 and is scheduled for broadcast on Mountain Lake PBS on November 11, 2014. The funds raised on Kickstarter will help bring the project to completion, and will cover the costs of post-production and distribution.
"it has been an honor to spend time with these veterans and learn their stories…..," said Tomeka Weatherspoon, producer of ON HOME GROUND.
“Our aim is to increase awareness and engagement around this very important issue. This region has a rich military history, and as the region’s storyteller, we hope to spark conversations and give the public an opportunity to share their story of service.” said Alice Recore, President & CEO of Mountain Lake PBS.
Funds are being raised through Kickstarter.com, a site where individuals are given the opportunity to invest in projects that match their interests. This film, ON HOME GROUND, has a fundraising window that ends on October 24, and if the $10,000 budget is not raised, all the pledges will be cancelled.
