Local contest part of effort to mobilize children across America to write and illustrate their own stories
Plattsburgh, NY – 6/13/2011 — Mountain Lake PBS honored the winners of its annual PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest with an exclusive event on May 9th, 2011. The celebration program will be broadcast on Mountain Lake PBS on July 13th at 8pm and on July 16th at 5pm.
The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest invites children from kindergarten to third grade to write and illustrate their own stories. Entries were judged by a local panel in the station’s contest, and each participant received a special Certificate of Achievement with a gift bag that included a trophy, books, and a special Writer’s Contest T-Shirt.
Local author, Amy Guglielmo, participated at the event, and talked with the young writers about the inspiration for her “Touch the Art” series of kids books.
“Kids naturally have a keen sense of curiosity and incredible imaginations,” said Jane Owens, Director of Outreach and Education. “The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest provides a safe community forum for our region’s children to express their ideas while fostering key early literacy skills like story-telling.”
This contest is a part of Mountain Lake's 360-degree approach to literacy that includes on-air kids programming, online resources like PBS KIDS Island, and on-the-ground events in the community. The winning stories and illustrations are published online at mountainlake.org/education/education-initiatives/writing-contest.html.
The PBS KIDS GO! Writers Contest extends the powerful tradition and annual success of the 15 year national “Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest,” originally created by WNED-TV Buffalo/Toronto and NET Nebraska.
