What is the DTV Transition?
It is the switch to digital broadcasting only, ending analog broadcasting; it will allow televisions stations to offer improved picture and sound quality and additional channels.

Why is the DTV Transition Happening?
The U.S. conversion to digital television is a United States government mandate, legally requiring all U.S. broadcasters to end analog broadcasting by mid-night on Tuesday, February 17, 2009.  Digital technology is more flexible and efficient than the current analog system – and the United States Deficit Reduction Act requires all U.S. television stations to turn off their analog channels by the February 17, 2009 date, and begin broadcasting exclusively in digital.

Where is the DTV Switch Happening?
The transition to digital television is happening in the United States; however if you reside in Canada, and you receive over-the-air signals to watch U.S. stations, you will be affected by the transition, visit For Canadians.

When Will the Transition Happen?
On Tuesday, February 17, 2009 full-power broadcast television stations in the United States will stop broadcasting on analog airwaves and begin broadcasting only in digital.

Who is Impacted by the Transition?
If you use an antenna to watch television on a set that has an analog tuner – and don't subscribe to cable, satellite – you will need to upgrade to a digital television set or setop box by February 17, 2009.

How Will the DTV Transition Affect You?
OVER-THE-AIR – If you receive over-the-air signals exclusively in your home, you are at risk of losing your television signals if you do not take action by February 17, 2009; the three actions that you can take to continue getting television reception include:

  1. Purchase a DTV converter box for your existing television set; for which a coupon to help reduce out-of-pocket costs is available to U.S.citizens, visit Coupon Program;
  2. Purchase a television set with a built-in digital tuner;
  3. Or subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay provider – just make sure that the provider offers the local broadcast stations you want.

CABLE – If you receive cable exclusively in your home, your provider will make sure you continue to get local stations.

SATELLITE – If you receive satellite exclusively in your home, your provider will make sure you continue to get local stations.
